Wintering

Roses are not deciduous, they only go into a phase of winter
quiescence. Quick drops in winter temperature cause liquid in
the canes and trunk to expand when freezing. This expansion
bursts cells damaging or killing your plant. Hardy varieties
and own root roses are less susceptible to freeze damage.
- Choose winter hardy roses for your climatic zone.
- For roses that may be marginal in your zone, and for
all grafted roses winterize:

- Fold two sheets of newspaper in half
lengthwise. Staple together to form a large enough
circle to surround your rose.
- Fill the paper circle with pine needles,
compost, or soil.
- Springtime: remove paper circle and filling
material.
